Agricultural Province Effort in Animal Husbandry

Northeastern Jilin Province, an agricultural province with a large grain yield, realized a new balance in agricultural products after 10 years of continuous efforts.

Last year, the output value of livestock raising was 28 billion yuan (about US$3.36 billion), or 42 percent of the agricultural output value. Its outputs of meat, egg and milk were 2.48 million tons, 800,000 tons and 150,000 tons, with per capita output of meat at 90.4 kilograms, the highest in China. Grain output value over the past 10 years has decreased from 79.8 percent to around 50 percent of the agricultural output value.

One decade of great efforts have changed the province from a meat importer into an exporter. Its pork and beef have been transported to Japan, the Republic of Korea and the Middle East countries, besides southern provinces. Its annual chicken export volume is around 31,000 tons, one-tenth of the country's total.

However, the overstock of grain is still a headache in the province. Last year, its grain stock was as high as 28 billion kilograms, 9 billion kilograms more than the country's requirement.

It will construct projects to process 3 million tons of corn and 1.3 million tons of ethanol fuel production. To compete with the foreign markets, it will also develop animal epidemic prevention system in the next few years.

The province used to suffer from the great imbalance of agricultural products. Though six of the country's top 10 counties with large grain yield were located in Jilin, none of them really had a strong economic basis. Overstock of grain hampered local development.
