Shipwreck Death Toll Rises to 42 in Southwest China City

The bodies of 42 people who died in a shipwreck on January 29 in Hechuan, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, have been recovered, according to the latest report from local sources.

There were 38 people on board the wrecked ship who survived and four others are still missing, the sources said.

Major causes of the accident include overloading, sailing in heavy fog, and the inability of the captain to deal with the situation properly, according to the sources.

The private passenger ship ran aground on rocks when sailing from Xiaohe Town to Taihe Town at around 10 am on January 29.

Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the municipal government ordered Hechuan to organize more than a dozen boats and over 200 people to do an investigation along the route the boat was traveling.
