Ugandan President Concerned Over Escalating Violence at Campus

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is deeply concerned about the escalating violence at Makerere University Campus after a student was shot dead Thursday night, said a press release from the President's Office on Friday.

The president expressed dismay and shock at the brutal murder of the student, noting that this is not the first time a murder has been committed at the Makerere University, said the release.

Museveni has informed the university community that the government is taking over the entire security of the campus with immediate effect.

The president directed the Commissioner of Police to beef up police presence at the campus, it said,

He also promised that the government is going to ensure that such acts of violence never take place again at the university, the release added.

After the student was killed Thursday night, students staged protects in the capital Kampala following reported clashes between students and police on Friday morning.

Six or seven students have been reportedly killed at the university campus this semester.
