Shrimps, Crabs Available on Roof of World

Although Lhasa is so far from the sea, people living in this capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region now can easily enjoy fresh seafood in local restaurants, with a price similar to that in most other parts of China.

Available in a seafood wholesale market in the western suburbs of Lhasa are more than 40 kinds of aquatic products, such as sea

cucumbers, crabs, lobsters, turtles, carps, squids, kelp and jellyfish.

Most varieties of seafood are airlifted and others transported by trucks through the Qinghai-Tibet Highway.

In the past, seafood was so expensive that only few people could afford. Now shrimps cost about 140 yuan (US$16.9)

per kg and carps, 16 yuan per kg.
