More Taiwan Investment in North China Province

North China's Shanxi Province drew nearly US$17 million from Taiwan investors on some 15 projects in 2000, latest statistics show.

Shanxi exported products worth over US$17 million to Taiwan and imported US$16.6 million in goods last year, which added up to nearly US$34 million in total trade volume between the two regions.

Taiwanese investment on the Chinese mainland in the first 11 months of 2000 reached US$2.2 billion, doubling the amount for the corresponding period of 1999, according to the local media of Taiwan.

Continuous investment from Taiwan shows that Taiwan businessmen are confident and optimistic about the prospects of trade and economic cooperation across the Taiwan Straits, said Assistant Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Ma Xiuhong, adding that the investment is good for Taiwan's economic restructuring and benefits both sides.

Of nearly 11,200 Taiwanese visitors to Shanxi last year, more than 300 came for business purposes and some 10,000 people for traveling. Cross-Straits academic exchange programs in the fields of culture, economy, public health, religion and agriculture involved about 250 experts.
