Victims in Gas Tank Explosion Compensated
Three victims in a gas tank explosion accident in northeast China's Liaoning Province Friday Feb 2 received compensation of 440,000 yuan (US$about 52,800).
Fang Xiuyan, the 33-year-old female victim, got 185,000 yuan in compensation, Zhang Xijun received 88,300 yuan and Liu Jilie 166, 700 yuan.
Fang Xiuyan, her husband Zhang Xijun, and Liu Jilie, a waiter in the restaurant, were injured in the explosion in Guoquan Restaurant in An'shan on January 11, 2000.
An investigation discovered that the poor quality of the gas tank was the main reason for the accident. The investigation team suggested Laizhou Gas Equipment Factory of Shandong, the producer, pay for 70 percent of the compensation, and the restaurant pay the remaining 30 percent.
Lack of money affected the medical treatment of the three patients. The three victims sued the restaurant for compensation last July. The restaurant managing staff refused to pay for any compensation because they claimed themselves a victim as well
After negotiations and intercessions of the local people's court, the gas tank producer and the restaurant reached an agreement to pay for 70 percent and 30 percent of the compensation respectively.
