Namibia Takes Precaution Against Madcow DiseaseNamibia has launched a surveillance program to detect any signs of the madcow disease in the country, the South African Press Association reported on Thursday.This followed a warning from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) to countries around the world of the risk of the disease. Director of the Namibian Veterinary Services John Shaw said his country has strictly banned all imports of beef and ruminant animals from countries known to have the madcow disease. In a statement issued earlier this week, the FAO called for world action to protect the human population as well as the livestock industries. "There is an increasingly grave situation developing in the European Union (EU), with the madcow disease being identified in cattle in several member states of the EU which have until recently been regarded as free from the disease," the FAO said. |
