Majority of Products Measure up to StandardsNearly 76 per cent of the products selectively examined by the State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision in the fourth quarter of last year were up to State standards, according to the bureau, according to China Daily. The examination covered 2,331 products from 1,897 enterprises, including wheat flour, distilled spirits, processed meats, coal, steel, gasoline, agricultural equipment, and 18 types of products directly related to consumers' health and property security. The examination found more than 89 per cent of large-scale enterprises' products were up to standard, nearly 25 percentage points higher than for the products of small factories. Some quality problems exposed in the past have been solved, said the bureau. Overuse of nitrite in cooked meat was a continual problem in the past. Following two years of upgrading work, all cooked meats in the examination kept nitrites at acceptable levels, according to the bureau. Important resource products maintain comparatively high quality standards. Nearly 82 per cent of the 36 types of resource products including coal, carbamide and gasoline were up to State standards, nearly 6 percentage points higher than the overall average. The bureau also said the quality of some products including motorcycle tyres are close to or reach world advanced standards. However, the wheat flour and pickles examined overused additives and amediorants, which can affect consumers' health, according to the bureau. Some electrical appliances have quality problems that might involve consumers' personal safety. Among 22 types of examined fluorescent lamps, 19 types did not qualify and were likely to cause electric shocks, according to the bureau. Security problems were found with agricultural machinery. Most products had not installed protective safety shields. The bureau attributed the problems to such factors as quality supervision, equipment and management problems. The bureau urged enterprises whose products failed to meet quality standards to rectify and improve their production. The enterprises will be closed if they do not pass the reexamination. In another special examination of fireworks and firecrackers, traditional articles during Spring Festival, 51 per cent of the 49 products from 46 factories selectively examined were up to quality standards. Of the 36 types of fireworks and firecrackers from dealers examined, only 14 types were up to State standards. The reason for the low qualification rate is that some products are from illegal factories, said the bureau. The bureau urges the removal of the unqualified fireworks and crackers from counters. Supervision and inspection will be strengthened and unqualified products be eliminated. |
