People's Congress Delegate Arrested in Connection with Manslaughter

A delegate to the People's Congress of Jiulongpo District of Chongqing, a southwest China municipality, has been arrested recently in connection with manslaughter.

He Wei, the delegate and also chairman of the Chongqing-based Taiyang Group Company, together with several other people, forced two young ladies into a local bar on June 3, 2000.

He was disgruntled that one of the two ladies was greeted by her acquaintance who was also at the bar at that time. He Wei and his followers beat up the "acquaintance" with bottles and stabbed the "acquaintance" to death with a sharp knife.

They also injured a security guard on duty with the knife as they left the scene of the crime.

He Wei was detained on June 16 last year, but later released on bail. He refused several times the summons by the local procuratorate.

He was arrested when he tried to flee on January 20, 2001.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
