China Expects a Quick Reconstruction of Indian Quake-Hit State

China sincerely hopes that the people of the quake-stricken area of India, under the guidance of their government, will overcome the present difficulties and rebuild their homes as soon as possible, said foreign ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao Thursday in Beijing.

As a close neighbor of India, China is very much concerned with the disaster, which struck India's northwest state of Gujaraton on January 26, causing tremendous loss of life and property losses, Zhu said.

Chinese leaders Jiang Zemin, Li Peng and Premier Zhu Rongji offered their condolences to their Indian counterparts respectively the same day and delivered sympathy to victims and their relatives.

The Chinese government has also decided to provide materials worth 5 million yuan (about US$600,000) to the Indian government in an emergency humanitarian aid to the victims, which would be ferried there by special aircraft on February 4.

Also, the Chinese Government has decided to send a medical team to the quake-hit area for medical assistance, and both the Chinese Embassy in India and the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries have offered donations to the people of the quake-hit area.

Chinese Red Cross Society has offered US$50,000 in cash for assistance along with a telegraph sent to its Indian counterpart offering their condolences.
