Guangdong's Tourism Revenue Tops 100 Billion Yuan

For the first time in 2000, south China's Guangdong Province earned over 100 billion yuan (US$12 billion) from its tourism services, according to the Provincial Tourism Administration.

The province's total tourism earnings in 2000 was expected to reach 104 billion yuan (US$ 12.5 billion), up 8.17 percent from 1999. The figure accounted for a quarter of China's total tourism revenues.

Guangdong's tourism industry earned US$3.46 billion from its international service in 2000, up 5.5 percent from the previous year and making up more than one fifth of China's total. Also in 2000, Guangdong received 65.2 million overseas tourists.

The success in Guangdong's Tourism industgry is attributed largely to the introduction of the seven-day holiday system for the International Labor Day and the National Day.

Now most foreigners prefer to stay six days on average in Guangdong instead of three days previously.
