Another Survival Found as Indian Earthquake Death Toll Climbs

Miraculous feats of survival were still being reported Thursday from the site of India's earthquake disaster, with a 13-year-old girl vying for the media spotlight with a 102-year-old woman.

Priyanka Thakar, 13, was pulled out of the rubble in the early hours of the morning by a team of Turkish rescue workers in the worst-hit district of Bhuj in the western state of Gujarat.

Despite spending almost six days trapped under concrete, Thakar was rescued in excellent spirits and in relatively good physical shape, according to footage broadcast by a satellite televion channel.

Her rescue partially overshadowed that of 102-year-old Veji Bhen, who was trapped for more than four days, before being extricated from the ruins of her home in devastated Bachao township.

"She had no pulse, she was in a state of shock and was gasping for breath," an army doctor at the scene was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times newspaper.

Bachao, a once prosperous county township of 42,000, was one of the worst affected by the earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, which hit Gujarat Friday morning.

According to the news report, Veji Bhen was relieved to find that her 82-year-old son was alive.

Other miracle survivors have included a one-year-old child and a 75-year-old grandmother.
