Israeli Helicopters Bomb South LebanonIsraeli helicopters fired missiles and heavy machine guns on targets in south Lebanon Wednesday afternoon, Oriental Radio reported.The helicopters bombed the region of Wadi Asle, located between the Shebaa Farms, a disputed area along the Syrian-Lebanese border, and the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau of Syria occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East War. Syria and Lebanon claim that the Shebaa Farms, at the foot of the Golan Heights, belong to Lebanon. Israel said it captured the farms from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and the fate of the farms should be decided in its negotiations with Syria. Since Israel's pullout from south Lebanon on May 24 after 22 years of occupation, Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah and its allies have attacked Israeli troops near the farms and seized three soldiers in October. Lebanese security sources did not say if Wednesday's bomb was aimed at any resistance action. There were no immediate reports of possible casualties in the bombardment. Israeli army last Friday killed two Palestinian guerrillas in tank shelling in south Lebanon near the Shebaa Farms area. |
