China to Explore 2km Undersea

China is to start working on a deep-sea submergence-vehicle operational 2000 meters below sea level, said Jin Xianglong, academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering and research fellow with the Second Institute of State Oceanic Administration, at the New Spring Tea Party held in Zhejiang recently.

As is reported, only four countries in the world have deep-sea submergence-vehicles (2000 meters below), namely, the US, France, Japan and Russia.

January 16 saw the return of China's first unmanned experimental spacecraft "Shenzhou 2", which marks a closer step to the world level in explorations into the outer space.

Jin said that the research fields of outer space have been occupied nowadays when competition of science and technology keeps increasingly heating up. Under such circumstances, China must develop deep-sea technology so as to earn a position in oceanic space in the 21st century.
