Nanhai Park Uncovers Underwear

Nanhai, one of China's key underwear manufacturing bases, will pour an investment of 500 million yuan (US$60.24 million)into the creation of an international underwear park in Yanbu Town over the next couple of years, according to China Daily.

Located in the Pearl River Delta in South China's Guangdong Province, Nanhai has long been one of China's most important underwear manufacturing bases as well as one of the most important showcases of China's history of undergarments.

The project, or the China Nanhai International Underwear Park, will cover an area of 26.67 hectares and its construction is expected to get under way soon.

Jointly developed by Nanhai Orient Cybercity Development Co Ltd. and Nanhai Yanbu Urban Construction Development Co Ltd., the whole project is set to be completed in three years.

"People's need for good underwear will keep on intensifying in conjunction with improvements in their living standards," said Zhu Gangtao, president of the underwear park. "This is true not only of the nation, but the rest of the world as well."

Citing statistics, he said, Chinese people spend 40 yuan (US$4.82) annually on underwear, on average, while people in the United States spend over US$50.

Official figures say the sales volume of underwear surpassed 4.50 billion yuan (US$542.17 million) in China in 2000 and is expected to reach 60 billion yuan (US$7.23 billion) in 2001.

With China's entry into the World Trade Organization, and hence freedom from underwear export quotas, an even rosier prospect for the development of its underwear industry is expected, he said.

The establishment of an international underwear park will help gather global underwear brand names, auxiliary companies and the latest equipment for underwear manufacturing; provide a venue for market information exchanges as well as for underwear development trend studies £» and sharpen the competitive edge of China's underwear industry as a whole in the global market, he noted.

Blueprints of the park indicate that it will consist of an exposition and trading center for ready-made underwear, auxiliary materials and related equipment; a center to showcase the development of underwear through the ages as well as the world's latest underwear development trends£» and a center for underwear fashion design.

He said the park will regularly organize trade fairs to boost trade in ready-made underwear, auxiliary materials and related equipment.

The park will also periodically host modeling competitions, contests and auctions of underwear design.

The park will also be able to take advantage of state-of-the-art technology, including e-commerce for trade and computer- aided design for underwear designing.
