More People from Ethnic Groups Promoted to Leading PostsMore than 390,000 people from ethnic backgrounds in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have been recruited as government officials, accounting for 35.4 percent of the total number of officials in the region.Sources from the organization department of the regional committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said 35.1 percent of officials from ethnic backgrounds have received education above college. Guangxi has the greatest diversity of ethnic minorities of any region in China, and is a home to people from 28 ethnic backgrounds, with 12 major ethnic groups, including Zhuang, Miao, Yao, Mulam and Gin. A local official from the regional CPC committee said that promotion of people from ethnic groups to leading posts is very important. While holding two classes to train more than 1,000 local officials each year, 40 percent of whom are from ethnic groups, Guangxi has also selected many officials from ethnic backgrounds to receive training outside the region, gaining knowledge about economic management, industrial operation and business administration needed in the modernization drive, and developing the socialist market economy. In the past years, the region has sent more than 500 officials from ethnic backgrounds to receive training overseas, at such places as the United States, Australia and Singapore. In the meantime, the region has also selected 87 officials from ethnic groups to work for periods of time at the central Party and government departments, and another 200 officials from ethnic backgrounds have been chosen to work in economically developed coastal regions. More than 130 young officials from ethnic groups from the regional Party and government departments have been sent to work with grassroots organizations, while more than 280 officials from ethnic backgrounds working with grassroots organizations at lower levels have been sent to work temporarily with the regional Party and government departments.
