Officers of the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the Turkish border in Bulgaria's southern city of Svilengrad seized 44.97 kg of heroin Sunday, January 28, said Svilengrad Customs Spokesperson Kalina Petrova.
The drug was found inside the spare tyre of a Mercedes bus bound for Romania during a thorough check. The vehicle is owned by the Fatih company of Turkey.
The tyre was fixed under the floor in the front part of the bus. The officers took out 43 packets of a light-beige powdered substance, later identified as heroin.
The driver, a 36-year-old Turkish national citizen whose name is initialed as Z. K., was detained. The case was referred to investigative authorities in Svilengrad, Petrova said.
