U.S. Government Auctions Broadband Wireless LicensesThe U.S. government earned US$16.86 billion through the auction of broadband wireless spectrum licenses, the Federal Communication Commission ( FCC) said Friday.The FCC noted that a total of 422 licenses covering 195 zones were up for bids for the C and F broadband Personal Communications Services (PCS) spectrum for wireless data and voice communications. Wireless firms in the United States are hungry for new spectrum so they can launch new services and catch up with developments overseas, analysts said. Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Vodafone Group PLC and Verizon Communications Inc. and the biggest U.S. wireless company, topped the list of the highest bids, US$8.7 billion for a total of 113 licenses. Alaska Native Wireless, backed by AT and T Corp, spent US$2.89 billion for 44 licenses and Salmon PCS bid US$2.35 billion for 79 licenses. |
