Green Areas Expand in Urban ShanghaiThe green areas in the urban district of Shanghai, China's largest industry center, have expanded by 1,484 hectares to reach 12,601 hectares by the end of 2000.At present, the area covered by plants in downtown Shanghai has surpassed 21 percent of the total. The per capita occupation of green area has risen to 4.6 square meters. The municipal government planted 25,000 trees and grew flowers and plants on 820 hectares last year. Over 100 varieties were imported from abroad. The city also built seven parks to make the total number reach 122. |
