Chinese President Mourns Death of Kabila

Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Sunday sent a telegram to Joseph Kabila, the new leader of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), expressing his profound condolences over the death of President Laurent Kabila, who was assassinated earlier this month.

Laurent Kabila made unremitting efforts in safeguarding his country's sovereignty and territorial integrity and defending national independence, Jiang said.

Describing Laurent Kabila as an old friend of the Chinese people, Jiang said the late DRC president made important contributions to the development of the traditional friendship and friendly relations of cooperation between the two countries and two peoples.

Jiang said he was convinced that the government and people of the DRC will overcome their immense grief and carry forward the unfinished lifework of the late DRC president.

Laurent Kabila became president of the DRC in May 1999.
