No Leukemia Case Found Among Russian Paratroopers in Kosovo

There is no leukemia case among Russian paratroopers in Kosovo, first deputy commander of the Russian Air-borne Troops Lt. Gen. Nikolai Staskov announced Sunday.

Staskov said that more than half of the 3,616 Russian peacemaking soldiers in Kosovo have been examined and no case of leukemia was discovered.

"A medical examination of servicemen from the Russian peacemaking contingent in Kosovo has been conducted since early January," for the leukemia danger posed by the use of depleted uranium munitions by NATO troops in its air strikes against Yugoslavia in spring of 1999, the general said.

There is also a medical examination for paratroopers stationed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as servicemen who have been to the Balkans, he added.
