Australian Labor Party Leader Outlines Election Strategy

Australian opposition Labor Party leader Kim Beazley Monday declared public health, education, living standards and investment in research as the "four pillars" of his party's federal election strategy.

Launching the official start of the party's campaign in Sydney, Beazley said he is confident of returning the party to power.

"We expect to be in government this time next year," he told reporters.

In comments last year, Prime Minister John Howard indicated the federal election was not likely to be held until later this year.

Beazley said the Opposition would also try to restore "equity" to school funding and inject more funding into research.

"They are the foundations on which I will build a new Labor government," Beazley said.
