Liaoning Carry Outs Campaign Against Porn VCDs

Northeast China's Liaoning Province Sunday closed a large market for pornographic and illegal audio and video products.

The 47,000-square-meter market in Haicheng was opened in 1998. Over the past two years, the market has attracted more than 6,000 businesses and stores to sell audio and video products, shaping into the largest distribution center of its kind in northwest China.

However, with the booming business development, many storeowners started to deal with the sale and manufacturing of pirated pornographic and illegal audio and video publications.

The illegal dealing could bring them much more profits than trading legal audio and video publications, said local officials.

Local police confiscated more than 100,000 illegal electronic publications and pornographic audio-video products in a campaign last December.

Early this month, the provincial government decided to shut down the market as further efforts to crack down on the sale and manufacture of illegal audio and video publications.
