Ghaddafi, Egypt's FM Meet on Sudan Issue

Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi Saturday met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa in the Libyan capital of Tripoli.

They discussed the outcome of a joint Libyan-Egyptian initiative aimed to end Sudan's 17-year civil to achieve a national reconciliation in the country.

During the meeting, Moussa delivered to the Libyan leader a message from Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and briefed him on the results of a three-way meeting held Friday night with Libya's Secretary for African Unity Ali Abdel Salam Triki and Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismail, the official Libyan News Agency reported.

The three-way meeting came in the context of the Libyan-Egyptian initiative launched in August 1999, which calls for reconciliation between all Sudanese factions.

The Sudanese foreign minister expressed his country's appreciation for efforts made by Libya and Egypt to help Sudan's warring parties bury the hatchet and achieve security and stability, stressing Sudan's keenness to put the initiative into force.

During the meeting, the participants believed this initiative was the best means for ending Sudan's civil war and achieving stability in Sudan.

The initiative went in parallel with the mediation of the Inter- Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) which sponsored peace negotiations between the Sudanese government and the southern rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), which has been fighting since 1983 for greater autonomy for the mostly Christian and animist areas.

Moussa arrived in Tripoli on January 18 on two-day official visit to Libya, during which he discussed with Libya's top officials bilateral ties and regional and international issues of mutual interest.
