Salt-Water Spring Tastes Less salty

Ice is formed nearly to enclose the creek originating from a salt water spring in the dryed-up Lop Nur lake in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The photo was taken Friday Jan. 19, 2001. The ice layer betrays a desalination evolution that the salt-water spring is undergoing, the cause of which is yet to be found. The spring is what remains of the Lop Nur lake that dried up in 1972.

Premier Zhu Meets with Kim Jong Il in Shanghai

President Jiang Zemin Meets with Kim Jong Il

Kim Jong Il, General-Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee and Chairman of the National Defense Commission, paid an unofficial visit to China from January 15 to 20. Kim made the visit at the invitation of Jiang Zemin, General-secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese President, a spokesman with the International Department of CPC Central Committee announced in Beijing Saturday, January 20.
