Disaster Relief in Blizzard-hit North ChinaPeople in blizzard-attacked Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are getting grain and forage from local governments to weather through the hard time.Xilin Gol League began to lend 4.62 million kilograms of grain to 18,000 households of herdsmen and farmers. As the most suffered victim of the blizzard, the League has confirmed death of 23 people and tens of thousands of livestock. The autonomous region in north China has undergone the heaviest snowstorm since last winter which has been rare over the past four decades. The continuing snowfall has toppled down sheep pens and cattle sheds. The disaster-hit league has received a donation of 1.94 million yuan (US$234,000) and 300,000 pieces of clothes. Local civil affairs department has allocated 6.3 million yuan for emergent relief. Together with eight million yuan of special fund for aiding the poor, all the money and materials will be used to help local people get through the disaster. To reduce the losses caused by the snowstorms, the League decided to help sell more livestock raised by local people. Up to date 7.97 million heads of livestock have been sold, 1.8 million heads more than that of last year. People in the disaster-torn area were also organized to start self-help production projects to overcome adversity through greater production. There are still four months to go before the alarm of snow disaster is dismissed and the disaster-relief work will continue for another 80 days.
