U.S. Senate Confirms 7 Bush Cabinet Nominees

Shortly after George W. Bush was sworn in as the 43rd president of the United States, the U.S. Senate Saturday confirmed seven of his Cabinet nominees.

Senators gave their approval in a single voice vote and with almost no debate during a rare Saturday session.

Moving quickly to get the Republican administration up and running, the Senate approved former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin Powell to head the State Department, former Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld for a second turn as defense secretary and retired industrialist Paul O'Neill for the treasury post.

Also confirmed were Don Evans as commerce secretary, Spencer Abraham as energy secretary, Ann Veneman as agriculture secretary and Roderick Paige as education secretary.

These nominees breezed through their confirmation hearings.
