Ice Run Reported at Lower Reaches of Yellow River

Spring Flood Caused by Melting Ice Appears in Upper Yellow River
Owing to two drastic drops in temperature in northern and eastern China, the embankments along the lower reaches of the Yellow River in Shandong Province are sustaining a high-level of ice run.

The river's estuary is likely to be frozen in the upcoming days. The density of the ice run at the Dongpinghu and Macha river section is as high as 90 percent with an ice layer ranging from two to eight cm covering the water. The largest iceberg is 100 sq. meters in size.

The provincial government has organized thousands of people into emergency teams to prevent the possible danger of breaches along the embankments that may develop due to an increased flow of water with the coming of spring.

To ensure a normal supply of water to the Tianjin Municipality, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters asked Xiaolangdi Reservoir to discharge water at a flow of 350 cubic meters per second.
