Vietnamese Delegation in Iraq for Promotion of Relations

A large, high-level delegation of Vietnam arrived here on Friday by a direct flight for a three- day visit aimed at promoting the bilateral relations, especially in trade.

This was the first flight to carry a delegation from Vietnam to Iraq in a decade, during which Baghdad has been under international air embargo triggered by its invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan said upon arrival of his 100-member delegation that he would hold talks with Iraqi officials on ways of boosting bilateral relations.

Nguyen added that he brought a letter from Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on developing bilateral relations.

He reiterated Vietnam's call for the lifting of the decade-old sanctions imposed on Iraq by the United Nations Security Council after its invasion of Kuwait.

Iraq and Vietnam maintain good relations. A senior Vietnamese official visited Baghdad last June and signed an agreement on increasing cooperation in the oil, agricultural and trade sectors.
