US Extends Full Support to Philippines' New Administration

The United States through its embassy in the Philippines expressed its pleasure over the recent development in the Philippines' political situation.

The US embassy said in a statement that it is glad that the former president Joseph Estrada finally stepped down and that former vice president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was already sworn in to office as the country's new president.

The United States has extended its full support to the new administration.

The US support came after Arroyo took the oath of office as the 14th Philippine President.

She was sworn in as the new Philippine president after the chief justice of the Supreme Court declared the vacancy of the presidency.

Saturday afternoon, Estrada and his family formally left the presidential palace for the southern city of Davao. Estrada, however, questioned the legality of Arroyo proclamation as the new Philippine president.

But the then outgoing president expressed his wish not to be "a factor that will prevent the restoration of peace" in the country.
