HK to Send Delegation to 9th National Games

HK to Take Part in 9th National Sports Games of China
Timothy Fok Tsun-ting, president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, January 18 announced that Hong Kong will send a 300-strong delegation to take part in the 150 items of 35 events at the 9th National Games, which will be held in Guangdong Province at the end of 2001.

According to Fok, also president of the Preparatory Committee of HK delegation to the 9th National Games, the Hong Kong delegation is approved by the State General Administration of Sports to take part in finals of 24 events directly except for 11 of all 35 events at the 9th National Sports Games.

Hong Kong athletes are expected to get more experiences and enhance their skills through competing with the State-level athletes, and thus help promote sports development in Hong Kong, Fok added.

Speaking about whether Hong Kong will undertake the event of free boxing patter (Sanda) of the 9th National Games, Leung Sai-wah, director of HK Leisure and Culture Services Department,, said that the matter is being discussed with the State General Administration of Sports, and the result will come out in the near future.

Fok said that two conditions are required for Hong Kong to undertake competitive events: first, the number of athletes should be small; second, Hong Kong's competitors should be strong enough to make good achievements. Judging from the present situation, the number of athletes participating in the preliminaries of the event of free boxing pattern (Sanda) will at least exceed 500 and the budget for the event will reach as high as HK$8millon. Moreover, Hong Kong is not in a position to win medals in this event.

Macao had got the right to hold two events, hockey and preliminaries in the skills and tricks of wushu (martial art) in the 9th National Sports Games at the end of 1999 before its return. to the motherland.

As early as 1997, the year of its homecoming, Hong Kong had, for the first time, sent its delegation to the 8th National Games held in Shanghai and its delegation, with the winning of two gold medals, ranked 27th on the list of gold medal winners emerged from among all the 46 delegations.
