Estrada Reportedly Negotiating Resignation
President Joseph Estrada's hold on power fell apart as military and political allies abandoned him and hundreds of thousands of Filipinos planned to march on the presidential palace Jan.20 to force him out. Around dawn Jan.20, many of the demonstrators began moving away from their rallying point toward Estrada's headquarters. His vice president - who has led the opposition campaign to remove him - on Jan.19 declared herself the new commander in chief of the military.
