US Senate to Confirm Some of Bush's Cabinet Nominees Saturday

The US Senate will confirm some of President-elect George W. Bush's cabinet nominees within hours of his taking the oath of office, Senate Republican Leader Trent Lott said Friday.

Bush is sworn in as the 43rd president of the United States Saturday.

Lott told reporters that the Senate will meet Saturday to confirm Colin Powell as secretary of state, Paul O'Neill as secretary of treasury and Donald Rumsfeld as secretary of defense. The three nominees are expected to win easy confirmation by voice vote, he added.

The Senate will take up most of the other nominations on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, but a few late choices, such at Elaine Chao, who was nominated to be labor secretary after Linda Chavez withdrew her name amid revelations she housed an illegal alien, may come later, Lott said.
