Israelis, Palestinians Resume Talks Near Tel AvivIsrael and the Palestinians resumed peace talks near Tel Aviv on Thursday, Israeli government sources said.Israeli Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami and Palestine Council Speaker Ahmed Qurei led the Israeli and Palestinian negotiating teams to the talks, said the sources. Both sides resumed the negotiations after a day of adjournment on Wednesday, when Ben-Ami visited Egypt and met with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Cairo. During the meeting, Arafat proposed the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations be held in Egypt's Sinai resort of Taba for a permanent peace deal prior to the Israeli prime ministerial election on February 6. Just ahead of Thursday's talks, Ben-Ami briefed Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak on Arafat's proposal, but Barak has yet to agree on it, the sources added. |
