Capital Registers Soaring Import and Export Volume

Foreign trade in Beijing maintained upbeat growth momentum last year, with the total export and import volume hitting US$11.65 billion, up 38.8 percent on an annual basis.

Latest statistics the Beijing customs and foreign trade and economic commission disclosed here Friday show that enterprises in Beijing registered a total import volume of US$7.02 billion, up 36.8 percent from the same period in 1999, while exports hit 4.63 billion yuan, up 41.8 percent.

Sources said that Japan, Finland and the United States were the top three foreign trade partners of Beijing, with import and export volumes standing at US$2.43 billion, US$1.51 billion and US$1.38 billion, respectively.

Mechanical and electronic products, hi-tech products and garments were the leading products being exported, sources said.

Sources also show that the foreign trade of foreign-funded companies in Beijing accounted for 62 percent of Beijing's total, up from less than 50 percent in previous years.
