UN Staff to Remain in Afghanistan Despite Sanctions

The UN staff affiliated with different agencies in Afghanistan will remain there despite the fresh sanctions which go into effect from January 19, The Frontier Post reported on Friday.

The report quoted UN spokesman Stephanie Bunker as saying that the UN offices would be closed and reopen on Sunday if the situation remained calm.

He said that the UN staff were still in the war-ravaged country as the Taliban authorities have given assurances for their security".

All the foreign UN personnel deployed in Afghanistan had come back after the approval of UN resolution by the United Nation Security Council, calling for the imposition of tough sanctions against Afghanistan. However some of them returned after the security assurances by the Taliban administration, according to the report.
