100 Billion Yuan of Tobacco Taxes Accrued to Treasury

China's tobacco industry is lately reported to have achieved a 10.9 percent increase in output and sales amount and realized a tax revenue of 105 billion yuan in reversing the downturn trend for the 4th straight year.

China continued to reduce the acreage and purchasing amount of tobacco in 2000. Minus 190,000 mu of flue-cured tobacco area, 1.6 million dan of flue-cured tobacco purchases were cut last year when compared with the country's planned amount. According to statistics, China produced 33.349 million cartons of cigarettes and sold 33.736 million cartons last year, a respective increase of 1.5 percent and 3.9 percent over previous year. China had an inventory of 3.118 million cartons of cigarettes last year, down 323,000 from previous year. Tobacco companies netted a total of 11.9 billion yuan of industrial profits and 17.84 billion yuan of commercial profits, up 20.63 percent and 31.28 percent, respectively.

Due to market changes, China's tobacco output and sales have decreased for four years in a row since 1996, and some tobacco enterprises were thus mired in predicament.

However, last year, Chinese tobacco industry converted its business concept and management method and saw to it that it be developed along the line "Market oriented, farming according to plans, and striving for improved tobacco quality" for a boom of the whole trade.
