Higher Income for Tibet's Herdsmen, Farmers
Authoritative statistics show that the per capita income for herdsmen and farmers in Tibet Autonomous Region, southwest China, rose by 5.3 percent to reach 1,325 yuan in 2000.
The increase is attributed to the sound economic development in the region's farm and pasture areas. The region has registered bumper harvests for 13 consecutive years and has produced enough grain for local people.
Despite serious floods last year, the region's total grain and rape seed outputs were initially estimated to have reached 962,000 tons and 43,000 tons respectively, up 4.3 percent and 5 percent, respectively, over 1999.
Marked increases were also reported in the output of vegetables, meat and milk in 2000, according to the regional statistics bureau.
Sources said that Tibet invested 260 million yuan (US$31.32 million) in 2000 in building irrigation facilities and bringing more farmland into irrigated land.
At the same time, the region also speeded up the readjustment of agricultural structure, and introduced more science and technology projects in farm and pasture areas.
