China Unicom Mobile Users Triple to 12.77Mn
China's second largest wireless carrier China Unicom said Thursday, January 18, it had 12.77 million mobile subscribers at the end of 2000, up more than 300 percent from the end of 1999.
Its paging subscribers reached 44.52 million at the end of last year, a net increase of 1.02 million from the end of the previous year, the company said in a statement.
The company also recorded strong growth in its long distance telephony services in 2000, with usage time increasing more than 12 times from 87 million minutes in 1999 to one billion minutes in 2000, the statement said.
Unicom said its nationwide fibre optic backbone network had been expanded to 56,000 kilometres, reaching major cities across China.
Unicom shares surged 12.39 percent to close at HK$12.7 on Thursday.
