Congolese Govt. Officially Announces Kabila's Death

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Thursday officially announced the death of President Laurent Kabila.

DRC Communication Minister Dominique Sakombi said in a statement broadcast on state-run television that Kabila, who was shot by one of bodyguards on Tuesday, died on Thursday morning

A funeral for Kabila is scheduled for Friday, the minister said.

He further declared that Joseph Kabila, son of the late president, has taken over as acting president of the DRC.

Before the announcement, the DRC government had insisted that Kabila was only wounded in Tuesday's attack but was still alive.
