Russian Minister Slams NATO over Uranium

The Russian minister in charge of nuclear energy on Tuesday accused NATO of "political irresponsibility" for its use of depleted uranium (DU) munitions in the Balkans.

The statement by Atomic Energy Minister Yevgeny Adamov came after NATO officials said in Brussels that they had decided to launch an inquiry into the health effects of the munitions.

Critics say residues from the armor-piercing munitions, used in both Bosnia and Kosovo, may be the cause of several cases of cancer that have been reported among troops having served in the region.

However NATO said on Tuesday that it could establish no link between the use of DU and the incidence of cancer among its troops.
