Fujian to Become Major Auto Base in 10 Years

The coastal Fujian province in east China will take the advantage of its cooperation with Taiwan across the Taiwan Straits to build itself into one of the country's important auto manufacturing bases within 10 years.

The province will strive to be ranked among the top ten largest vehicle producers of the country by the year 2005 when over 200,000 automobiles are to be produced annually with a total output value of 35 billion yuan, according to Ling Yuzhang, senior official in charge of the province's auto industry.

By the year 2010, the annual automobile production capacity will reach 500,000 involving a total output value of 80 billion yuan.

The auto industry in Fujian was depressed until the founding of a joint venture between Taiwan and Fujian six a years ago. The successful operation of the joint venture has helped the Fujian auto industry out of impasse.

According to Ling, Fujian will produce a wide range of vehicles ranging from luxury cars to light vehicle and trucks and those for agricultural use.
