China's Sun Yu Won First Title in Wagner's Vocal Contest

2001 Wagner Opera Singing Contest concluded in New York January 13. Some 200 Young baritone singers joined the contest and the final title went to Sun Yu of China with Der fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman), Wagner's classic opera, which is the first laurel in Wagner vocal contest for Chinese vocalists.

As reported, Sun Yu has been given an opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall, New York.

Sun went to Central Conservatory of Music together with his brother Sun Guoqing from Anhui Province after the entrance examination was resumed in China. There, he learned from Professor Li Weibo. Sun's first figure in opera stage is his successful portrait of the Earl in Figaro's Wedding, known as the greatest opera of Mozart. His second chance came when he gave wonderful performance of Qiu Hu, the leading role in Jin Xiang's Wilderness. The U.S. conductor Ms Boray was strongly impressed by his performance and offered him fellowship to study vocality in Peabody Conservatory of Music, Johns Hopkins University.

Sun has been invited by Placido Domingo, one of the top three tenors, to stage with him at the U.S. National theatre in Washington D.C. in February.

In addition to his achievements in opera, Sun is indulged in literature. A collection of his own novel and essays written in his spare time is said to be published by the Writers Publishing House soon.
