Xinjiang to Stabilize Cotton Output This Year

The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the largest cotton producing area in China, is to stabilize its cotton output at 1.5 billion kg this year, about the same figure of last year.

The cotton-grown area will be some one million hectares, including 56,600 ha for long-staple cotton and 13,300 ha for colored cotton, an official with the regional agricultural department said.

To raise the per unit cotton output, a great number of scientists have been sent down to grass-root units to pass on advanced agro-techniques.

The region expects to achieve the output goal of 2,250 kg per ha in 66,000 ha this year and 333,000 ha by 2005, the official said.
