Nigeria, Algeria Condemn Assassination of Kabila

Nigeria and Algeria Wednesday condemned the assassination of Laurent Kabila, president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to reports reaching here.

Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo, with his visiting Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika, issued a joint statement in Nigeria's capital Abuja, stressing they strongly oppose the use of violence in the change of government.

"We further condemn the resort to political assassination, as a means of settling disputes or resolving a crisis, " the two presidents said in the statement.

The two leaders also urged African countries to give "all necessary support" to the DRC so as to maintain peace and harmony in the central Africa country.

Bouteflika, also chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), was on a one-day visit to Nigeria.
