Ethiopian PM Reiterates Commitment to Peace Deal with Eritrea

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi reiterated here Wednesday that his government will implement firmly the tenets of the Ethio-Eritrean peace accord signed in Algiers, Algeria last December.

Meles made the remarks when he met with Legwaila Joseph Legwaila, special representative of the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan for the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Legwaila said on his part that it was his and Annan's fervent conviction that the on-going peace process would bear fruit, according to a spokesperson of the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry.

Legwaila and his entourage visited UN peacekeeping soldiers and military observers in the towns of Rama and Adigrat in the central Ethiopian border area on Monday.

It was reported that more than 3,400 of the proposed 4,200 peacekeeping force from 71 countries have been deployed along parts of the 1,000 kilometer Ethio-Eritrean border, which paves the way for the UN peacekeepers to create a buffer zone between the two countries in the near future.
