CSC Announces 2001 Scholarship Program

China Scholarship Council (CSC) recently announced its plan for providing scholarships for Chinese citizens wishing to study abroad in 2001.

After a few years' preparation and opinions-soliciting from various circles, China reformed its scholarship program starting from 1996. The principle followed by this new program is as follows: In compliance with the needs of China's economic and social development and under the overall guidance of the government plan, the new method is employed for the selection and management of students to be sent abroad for studies at public expenses. This method is known as "application by individuals, appraisal by experts, fair competition, selection of the best, dispatch under contract, and compensation upon breach of contract".

To enhance the international prestige of China's institutions of higher learning and build world-class universities for the training of high-level talents, with the approval of the State Council, the Action Program for education rejuvenation in the 21st century has been formally launched. A total of 503 senior visiting scholars specializing in natural sciences and 100 in social sciences have been selected by CSC for pursuing advanced studies abroad in 2001.

According to reports, CSC will select 2,300 personnel to study abroad this year, the work of handling applications will begin from February 2001 and end on March 31, 2001. Information about the scholarship program has been shown online in CSC website (http://www.csc.edu.cn).
