China's Top Legislator Winds up India VisitChina's top legislator Li Peng left Hyderabad Wednesday by special plane after a successful week-long official goodwill visit to IndiaLi's visit, having increased mutual understanding, promoted friendship and furthered bilateral cooperation, has scored a profound success. It is Li's first visit to India as chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), and the second following his last visit in 1991 as the premier. Li flew into in this capital of Andhra Pradesh from Bangalore and made a stop-over earlier Wednesday. He started the India tour by flying into Mumbai on January 9, as guest of Chairman Krishan Kant of the Upper House of the Parliament and Speaker G.M.C. Balayogi of the House of the People. Li's visit is an exchange of another high-level visit between China and India following President Jiang Zemin's state visit to India in 1996 and Indian President Kocheril Raman Narayanan's visit to China in May 2000. During his stay in New Delhi, Li held meetings and talks with Indian president, prime minister, foreign minister and parliamentary leaders, and reached extensive consensus on promoting state-to-state and parliamentary relations, and on the world situation. The leaders also discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral contacts and cooperation in various fields, including the parliamentary contacts. Li also toured the famous Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, and visited some companies of information industry in Bangalore, including the China-funded Huawei Technologies India Prv Ltd. Leaving aboard the same plane were: Li's wife Zhu Lin, Vice- chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Buhe, Standing Committee Member and Chairman of the NPC Ethnic Affairs Committee Wang Chaowen, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress Chen Huanyou, Standing Committee Member and Vice-chairman of the NPC Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee Xu Huizi, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Tibet Autonomous Regional People's Congress Raidi, Standing Committee Member and Member of the NPC Financial and Economic Committee Gu Shanqing, Deputy Secretary-General of the NPC Standing Committee Lu Congmin, Director of Li's office Wu Wenchang, and Assistant Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Li and his entourage were seen off at the airport by Indian ambassador to China Shivshankar Menon and other Indian officials. Hyderabad was the last stop of Li's five-city India tour, which also carried him to Mumbai, New Delhi, Agra and Bangalore. China and India, as the two largest developing countries in the world, have jointly initiated the Five Principles of Peaceful Co- existence. |
