Number of Serious Criminal Cases Drops in Macao

An annual report of local security forces indicates that criminal activities were curbed effectively in the year 2000 and public security improved to a great extent.

Figures in the report show that the number of criminal cases last year dropped 3.6 percent from that in 1999. The number of murder cases plummeted 72 percent while kidnapping cases plunged 67 percent.

In addition, the numbers of arson and robbing were greatly reduced, according to the report.

Improving public security should be attributed to the government's resolution and residents' cooperation, said Cheong Kuoc Va, secretary for security of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government.

In the new year, police forces in Macao will strengthen contacts with their counterparts in neighboring Guangdong Province and Hong Kong SAR to combat criminal activities, Cheong said.
