Macao SAR Govt Begins to Register Voters

The official registration of voters of Macao, a special administrative region (SAR) of China, was launched Wednesday in Macao.

Permanent Macao residents over the age of 18 are eligible for the registration. Legal social organizations are also required to get registered.

Residents can obtain registration forms at some designated government departments or download them via the Internet, and send the forms back in person or by means of mail or fax.

It is estimated that 300,000 people, out of a population of 430,000 are eligible to be voters.

It is the first registration since the founding of the Macao SAR in December of 1999.

The first Legislative Council of the Macao SAR will expire on October 15 this year, and new legislators have to be elected before the date.
